Actually, this ball was availed as a divinatory device in the 1940 in which it was denoted as the “magical ball”. Although the Magic 8-Ball did not exist in its present form till 1950, the functional component tended to be invented by Albert C. Carter, and he was inspired by the spirit writing tool used by his mother – Mary, a clairvoyant.

Once a store owner – Max Levinson – was approached by Carter, he called his brother-in-law – Abe Bookman, a graduate of Ohio Mechanics Institute. Carter filed for the patent for his instrument, assigning it to Levinson, Bookman, and then built the name Alabe Crafts, Inc. (Albert and Abe) in 1946. Later on, they sold the device, known as The Syco-Seer. After the death of Carter, Bookman soon made the improvements to the Syco-Seer. In 1948, it was encased in the iridescent crystal ball. In 1950, Chicago’s Brunswick Billiards commissioned Alabe Crafts in order to make the version in the shape of the traditional black and white 8-ball.
